Change is a constant, they say, and since late 2021, we've been hard at work, shaping up the next chapter of our ProtoPie brand. Today, we're thrilled to unveil the updates and showcase the direction in which we're taking our branding in this exciting new era. Let's dive in and explore these fresh changes that will make your ProtoPie experience even better.

Let's dive into the interesting updates happening with ProtoPie's branding!

As a designer, you probably understand the challenges of maintaining branding consistency. For visual designers, evolving a brand while retaining its essential characteristics and visual elements is quite a task. When I joined ProtoPie at the end of 2021, two things caught my attention about our brand: Pastel Gradients and 3D illustrations.

Pastel gradients are nice; they were meant to convey a sense of nurturing and care reminiscent of childhood's joyful exploration and playfulness. However, as we delved into understanding our audience, it became apparent that this design wasn't resonating with them as optimally as we wanted.

Moreover, applying pastel gradients presented a unique challenge. The contrast between the gradients and text often fell short of providing optimal readability, which was particularly noticeable when creating assets on a daily basis. This issue resulted in a lack of impact, with the gradient overpowering the text. It was evident that a solution was urgently needed.

Therefore our biggest challenge was figuring out how to evolve the branding while maintaining the familiar ProtoPie look and feel. We still wanted to maintain a sense of continuity because our identity was already established. This entire process was more like exploring and refining ProtoPie's brand identity.

Design principle: clarity and understanding

Our design principle remains unwavering amidst these branding updates – clarity and understanding. Every visual representation of ProtoPie must portray a clear message and leave no doubt in the viewer's mind.

In every step of our branding journey, we've prioritized this core principle, ensuring that our design not only captivates but also communicates effectively. Whether it's the choice of colors, the incorporation of 3D elements, or the use of gradients.

As we continue to evolve and refine our branding, clarity, and understanding will remain at the forefront of our design philosophy. We believe that clear communication is key to forging a deeper connection with our users, and we're dedicated to ensuring that every aspect of our brand reflects this commitment.

There aren't many resources available that explain how Branding/Visual design works alongside Product Design in tech companies. From my experience, each company has its unique way of managing these collaborations. Sharing insights about these practices is quite uncommon in the industry, as most teams tend to keep their internal operations guarded.

Moreover, collaboration can be challenging. Product Design teams often stick to a Design System that may not provide enough flexibility.

Within ProtoPie, our Design teams are organized by specific product areas. We have distinct roles, such as Product Designers and Website Designers, and my responsibility lies in Marketing Design and overseeing the branding and visual design aspects. Maintaining alignment among these teams presents its challenges, but at its core, it hinges on effective open communication and a continuous feedback loop.

We've adopted a practice of seamless information exchange, often soliciting opinions and insights across teams through direct synchronization. This approach has proven to be highly effective for us. Instead of adhering to a fixed schedule, which can sometimes impose unnecessary pressure on designers to share merely for the sake of it, we prioritize the quality and relevance of our exchanges. We opt to raise pertinent questions directly when the need arises and disseminate updates when they possess substantial value.

This approach fosters an environment where meaningful interactions take precedence, ensuring that each exchange adds value and contributes to the cohesion of our design efforts.

ProtoPie branding elements: colors, 3D illustrations, and gradients

At ProtoPie, our roots run deep in design, thanks to our CEO, Tony, who is a designer himself.

This collective creative spirit profoundly influences our communication style, which we've infused into our brand. Rather than adopting a traditional corporate tone, we aim to convey the warmth and informality of a casual gathering.

This approach is reflected in our branding designs. We draw inspiration from the world of baking and cooking, deriving it not only from our name but also from our 'Easy as Pie' slogan. 

This influence is evident in the wavy shapes, textures, and playful illustrations of literal pies, forks, and related designs that characterize our branding—each serving as metaphors for our approach to creating intuitive digital experiences. Just as a baker combines ingredients to craft a delicious pie, we offer the products to “bake” outstanding interactive experiences.

Aligning our colors was relatively straightforward. To keep it simple - Coral, the color of our logo, purple, and teal – represent our product, accompanied by neutrals that are integral to our design system.

We also expanded our palette by introducing deeper shades, particularly within the purples, to enhance contrast and readability. These darker tonalities now play a pivotal role, especially in contexts like ProtoPie Connect or when communicating within industries like automotive and cross-device experiences.

However, their versatility shines through as we seamlessly blend these new tonalities with our trademark ProtoPie colors – Purple, Coral, and Teal. This fusion allows us to craft distinctive visual elements that are uniquely ProtoPie's own.

We are well aware of the current popularity of 3D visuals, with many brands integrating them into their communication strategies. In our case, embracing 3D is a logical choice because it aligns seamlessly with the essence of our product. From IoT to 

, numerous designers now leverage ProtoPie to bridge the gap between physical products and the digital realm.

Also, integrating 3D elements enhances our ability to portray interactions like touch and voice more effectively compared to using 2D visuals. So, the 3D illustrations help us to provide a clearer depiction of how ProtoPie transforms abstract ideas into tangible, real-world experiences, and it’s also very versatile, so we can use it to replace photography in certain situations where it’s hard for us to have clear photography.

The use of gradients enables us to communicate various emotions and moods through a range of color combinations.

This approach helps us to add visual depth and dimension to our branding, creating a sense of realism and making our visuals more engaging. Gradients are a powerful tool that enriches our design, allowing us to convey a wider spectrum of feelings and enhancing the overall brand experience.

Take a look at this visual timeline illustrating our brand's evolution since version 6.0. In the rightmost column, you can see our most recent updates, which we have started to apply across our product, ProtoPie Website, and Social Media channels.

Branding Design is an ongoing process requiring constant attention and improvement. However, we believe that this direction provides us with more flexibility and better aligns with our design principle of clarity. With these improvements, we've dedicated time to truly understand our brand.

One of the advantages of handling this work in-house is our deep understanding of the product and our own working processes. Therefore, rather than opting for a drastic and sudden rebrand, we've chosen to gradually and organically evolve the brand to the point where we are today. This approach ensures that as the product evolves, our branding evolves alongside it.

Our journey to enhance and refine ProtoPie's branding is an ongoing one. We are dedicated to staying at the forefront of design innovation and ensuring that our brand remains a true reflection of our commitment to clarity, creativity, and user-centricity.

The Pro plan allows you to create and test highly realistic prototypes in a flexible, collaboration-friendly ecosystem — without the feature restrictions of the Free plan.

What makes the Pro plan particularly suited to teams prototyping innovative products is the access to 

ProtoPie Connect is an extension app that unlocks powerful features in the 

. In particular, it makes it possible to recreate digital experiences involving multiple displays, hardware, and APIs.

Although ProtoPie Connect is available to both Pro and Enterprise users, there are some important differences to consider when choosing a ProtoPie plan.

Connect for the Pro plan vs. Connect for the Enterprise plan

The Pro plan only gives access to the basic functionalities and built-in plugins of Connect Desktop — ProtoPie Connect’s desktop app.

Pro vs. Enterprise Plan : Which One Best Suits Your Needs?

, released in October 2021, introduced some major changes that our users were delighted with. Beyond just productivity-boosting features, like the dashboard and tabs, we also implemented many visual changes which we believe has vastly improved how ProtoPie looks. These all stem from the new ProtoPie Design System, which was created to deliver a more robust brand and user experience. Let’s delve into the story behind these changes.

The ProtoPie ecosystem consists of several products: ProtoPie Studio for the actual prototyping, ProtoPie Player for trying out prototypes on smart devices, and ProtoPie Cloud for collaboration and sharing. Users go back and forth between these products all the time when working on their prototyping projects.

However, each of these products used to live their own lives. They had their own visual elements (such as icons and colors) and their own UX. As a result, we were providing an inconsistent experience across the ecosystem. For example, the website and ProtoPie Player would use coral as a primary color, whereas ProtoPie Studio and ProtoPie Cloud used different shades of indigo. This mismatch led to a confusing experience for our users. In order to solve this, we had to face reality and create a single design system for the entire ProtoPie ecosystem.

We brought together all of ProtoPie’s brand and product designers to consider two questions:

What core design values does ProtoPie want to promote?

What kind of design principles should ProtoPie itself adhere to?

To decide on the appropriate next steps, we realized that we needed to first create an environment where designers with different opinions could come together and find common ground.

We began by compiling all relevant keywords that came to mind. We then explored the kind of brand that we wanted ProtoPie to be—and the value that we wanted to provide to our users.

This process helped us narrow down to the three keywords shown above. In the end, we found that the common values that each keyword shared were 

. As ProtoPie is a productivity tool, the most important thing for us is creating products that make users' ideas shine, increase their productivity, and make users happier.

We began the process by going through the 

. This methodology states that you should start the design process by focusing on the smallest element possible, before expanding by trying different combinations of elements together. We therefore started by defining the smallest design elements that would serve as the foundation of our overall design efforts.

We tried to blend our product principles—directly and indirectly—into each of our elements. Below, we’ll delve into more details about the thought process behind our decisions. Let’s take a look at 4 of the elements that make up the ProtoPie Design System: colors, iconography, typography, and layout.

Our first step was to integrate two colors, coral and indigo, into one primary color. This might sound simple—but it was surprisingly complex.

If we chose to also use coral, our initial brand color, on our product, our brand would stand out more. However, coral is typically associated with warnings or even danger. Therefore, using coral as a primary color could backfire from a UI perspective.

We decided to use purple as our new primary color. It’s fairly similar to our current brand color and is perceived as being fairly neutral. We also changed our product color from blue-gray to neutral gray, reflecting our goal to make our users’ ideas shine without being distracting.

With this in mind, we also introduced two new themes: light and dark. Users can pick and choose which theme to use depending on the type of work environment they want to create, or what they feel most comfortable using.

We tried to maximize each theme’s readability by setting the same color in subtly different shades as a pair. For example, you might notice that the purple is slightly darker and more saturated in the dark theme compared to the light theme.

Digital environments have bidirectional interactions between a product and its users, so it helps to clear visualize how state changes appear. While the rules for state changes across ProtoPie’s products used to be inconsistent, we made sure to standardize and integrate them in this update.

We established new iconography to accompany our logo typeface. As you can see, this iconography is bold and geometric while also unifying the various different styles from our products. We paid close attention to creating a universal shape that can be intuitively understood by our diverse group of users working across various product domains, beyond simply mobile app design, (e.g., automotive and wearables.)

We created each icon with a clear silhouette so that they would be clearly distinguishable regardless of their size. The ProtoPie icons often need to convey complex metaphors. To intuitively communicate their meaning, we used a two-tone style that differentiates primary and supporting parts using different tones.

We consolidated icons that had different shapes but the same meaning into one. Then, we created icon shape variations to indicate different states—and to intuitively convey what each state means.

Gilroy, ProtoPie’s brand typeface, is a beautiful and high-quality font that fits our brand identity. However, it has strongand decorative characteristics. We therefore wanted to find another supporting font that would not draw unnecessary attention—but would instead help make our users’ prototypes stand out more.

Hence, we adopted Inter as our secondary typeface. Created by 

, it’s a highly readable, more standard typeface that’s carefully crafted for computer screens. We applied Inter to the entire ecosystem except for the title area, where we still wanted to prominently display our brand identity. In summary, we use a total of three fonts throughout ProtoPie. These are all based on our design system guidelines, including the one for code snippets.

Furthermore, to ensure a certain level of readability, we enforce restrictions for the maximum and minimum size of fonts used throughout.

In terms of the layout, we came up with a series of guidelines to ensure an immersive user experience. We considered the number of items in a row and the ideal size of each item to maximize user engagement.

We also established breakpoints that all products could share so that it feels like a single, continuous experience across the ProtoPie ecosystem. We applied the same responsive design to our website, to ProtoPie Cloud, and to ProtoPie Studio.

We made sure to continuously explain these guidelines and changes to all the teams involved in updating our design system, from designers to engineers. Whenever they had questions or queries, we took the time necessary to explain our thinking—and to communicate how these changes would have a positive impact on our users.

These guidelines—from the basics of our elements and the rationale behind each style, all the way to steps to further expand the design system—serve to form a consensus between our teams and solidify the design principles that we had previously established.

ProtoPie has been at the forefront of innovation since day one. As part of our commitment, we are delighted to share with you that ProtoPie is officially ISO 27001 & 27701 compliant. An independent certification body, 

, has conducted various thorough audits. As a result, SGS successfully granted us both the ISO:27001:2013 and ISO:27701:2019 certifications.

Besides being one of the well-known information security standards, ISO 27001 is the sole auditable international standard that defines the requirements of an information security management system (ISMS). An ISMS is a documented system comprising of a set of policies, procedures, and processes to protect assets from threats and vulnerabilities. Examples would be cyber attacks, hacks, data leaks, or theft.

The ISO:27001:2013 certification shows that ProtoPie has defined and implemented an ISMS following the industry's best practices.

ISO 27701 is an extension to ISO 27001. This relatively new information security standard provides the framework for companies like ProtoPie to implement policies, procedures, and processes to manage data privacy. Having a proper Privacy Information Management System (PIMS) reduces the risk to the privacy rights of individuals and organizations.

The ISO:27701:2019 certification embodies ProtoPie its commitment to safeguarding your personal data as well as supporting compliance to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other data privacy requirements.

it simply means that we are committed to protecting your data privacy and securing your most important information. Aside from the above, we continue to enforce our security policies, monitor our systems 24/7, and respond promptly when issues may arise. We'll do annual ISO 27001 and 27701 audits to make sure we still meet their standards. Moreover, we'll perform penetration tests and other internal audits on a regular basis.

By joining ProtoPie Ambassadors, you can inspire and empower others to create and prototype the next generation of digital products and experiences. Nurture new ideas and get feedback from other ambassadors and members of the 

Join a positive and supportive community of ProtoPie enthusiasts from all over the world! It's a fantastic opportunity to share good practices, learn from each other and develop your skills!

You can choose how to contribute as an Ambassador. This could be organizing events, starting your own local community, creating content using ProtoPie or being a top contributor in the 

commit to a minimum of 2 big (+ 50 attendees) or 3 smaller events per year (if you apply as event organizer)

create at least 1 piece of content every 3 months and have an active online community (if you apply as 

dedicate at least 2-3 hours per week to community activities - such as starting/joining conversations or sharing knowledge - and have intermediate to advanced ProtoPie skills (if you apply as 

occasionally contribute to our live events and/or 

 but you can always renew it. 
Note: Ambassadors who repeatedly fail to comply with these rules and/or our Code of Conduct will have their memberships revoked.
